Glen Albyn was a Highland single malt distillery in Inverness, founded in 1846 by James Sutherland on the site of a former brewery near the Caledonian Canal. Its early history was difficult, including a serious fire only a few years after opening, and the distillery later became closely linked with neighbouring Glen Mhor through shared ownership under Mackinlay & Birnie.
The distillery eventually became part of the Distillers Company Limited and later the portfolio now associated with Diageo. Glen Albyn closed in 1983 during the wider industry downturn and was demolished later in the decade, leaving no working distillery buildings and no prospect of production returning on the original site.
During its active life, Glen Albyn was used largely for blending, and official single malt releases were always scarce. Surviving bottlings now come from rare old official releases, Diageo's Rare Malts series and a small number of independent bottlers. The whisky is generally associated with an old-style Highland character, showing malt, honey, citrus, orchard fruit, soft wax, herbs and gentle spice, with older casks developing polished oak, dried fruit and a more complex, slightly austere depth.
Glen Albyn is one of the lost Inverness malts, remembered alongside Glen Mhor and Millburn as part of a distilling landscape that has almost entirely disappeared. Its remaining bottlings are increasingly rare, offering a glimpse of a Highland whisky style that was once hidden mainly inside blends and is now preserved only in finite old stocks.
