Togouchi is a Japanese whisky brand from Sakurao Brewery and Distillery in Hiroshima Prefecture, a producer whose drinks-making history dates back to 1918. The whisky takes its name from Togouchi, a mountainous area where casks are matured in a former railway tunnel, giving the brand one of the more distinctive maturation stories in Japanese whisky.
Historically, Togouchi was known for blending imported whisky stocks in Japan, with maturation taking place in the cool, humid tunnel environment. Since the establishment of Sakurao Distillery, the producer has developed its own Japanese-distilled malt and grain whisky, and the range now includes expressions that sit alongside the broader Sakurao whisky portfolio.
The line-up includes blended whiskies such as Kiwami and Premium, as well as Togouchi Single Malt and limited cask-influenced releases. The style is generally clean, delicate and gently aromatic, with orchard fruit, vanilla, spice, soft malt and, in some bottlings, richer sherry or Mizunara oak influence.
Togouchi is best approached with an eye for the details on each label, as composition and classification can vary across the range. At its most distinctive, it offers a subtle Japanese whisky profile shaped by Hiroshima craftsmanship, mountain maturation and a quieter, more textural style than many of the category's best-known names.
